History - Compared with other cities in the western U.S., Las Vegas (literally, "spring water" in Spanish) is a relatively new arrival. The company was founded in 1905, and for years it was just a small settlement in the desert. However, some important events coming together in less than twenty years to help Las Vegas grow into what it is today:
Construction of Hoover Dam in 1928 brought thousands of workers to the area. What is now known as Boulder City was established for the workers.
Nevada legalized gambling in 1931, and downtown Las Vegas into an entertainment center for the dam workers, with casinos and speakeasies. Business became so good that it surpassed Reno as the gambling capital of the world in less than 10 years. During the same period in the 1930s, Los Angeles was also growing rapidly from a small town into a global center for entertainment, aerospace, and defense industries, but because gambling is strictly prohibited in California at that time, Southern California workers began traveling to Las Vegas to enjoy gambling there.
In 1941, the luxurious El Rancho Vegas resort opened on what would become the Las Vegas Strip. Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel later opened the Flamingo Hotel in 1946. The second opening of the resort building boom start and established a tradition of one-upmanship (with each new hotel / casino tries to outdo its predecessor) which continues today, but also starting a long tradition of organized crime involvement in the Nevada gambling industry. In the 1990s, as well as federal enforcement of racketeers Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO Act) as well as investment by established firms and professional management installment virtually eliminate remaining organized crime involvement.
